OECD Global Forum on Development (4-5 Avril, Paris)

OECD GLOBAL FORUM ON DEVELOPMENT: Innovative Approaches to Poverty Reduction, Social Cohesion and Progress in the 21st Century

4 April (Afternoon) and 5 April (all day) 2013 OECD Conference Centre, Paris

The 2013 Global Forum on Development will be the first in a series of three forums over the next three years focusing on the theme of “Preparing for the Post-2015 World.” The 2013 Forum will focus on what future poverty reduction policies and programs could be in light of the changing dynamics of poverty within and among countries, the continuing challenges surrounding achievement of sustainable growth, and the emerging implications of countries, and segments within countries, growing at multiple speeds and displaying differing degrees of social cohesion. The 2014 Forum will focus on rethinking structural challenges to greater production whereas the 2015 Forum will examine the evolving opportunities to mobilizing resources for development.

This forum will provide a platform for exchanging perspectives on the policy consequences of different approaches to poverty reduction and social cohesion.  Understanding the interconnectedness and trade-offs between policies is essential for managing the inter-linkages between key developing trends.  The challenges may be complex, but the policies and interventions will be specific.  Use of a more holistic framework may aid in balancing between multiple trends and desired ends.  It better reflects the reality facing decision-makers.  Likewise, to ensure policies and subsequent adjustments drawn on quality information, how policy goals will be measured and data collected becomes crucial for understanding whether and how progress is unfolding at national and global levels.

With the global community’s attention focused on what to commit to doing better in the post-2015 world, this Global Forum’s contribution centers on highlighting the complex, shared challenges and emerging good policy approaches and interventions.  These insights may also provide inspiration elsewhere as the what and how of their success is better understood.

This Forum can assist governments, civil society and business leaders and practioners in refining their positions on the poverty reduction policies and programs to pursue and the global goals to support in the UN-led process for identifying those to follow the current Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
