Job: New Professorships relating to Urban and African Studies (University of Basel)

The University of Basel is introducing a new master studies programme in Urban and Landscape Studies and advertises three new positions, two of which relate explicitly to African Studies.

The first position is a full time tenure track or tenured Professorship in Urban Anthropology (with a thematic focus on Africa) at the assistant, associate, or full professor level.
We are seeking candidates with an internationally recognised research and teaching record in social or cultural anthropology or a neighbouring discipline. The candidate should be specialized in the social articulation of and aesthetic practice in urban spaces, particularly in African contexts, and be able to apply a reflected comparative approach to the study of urban spaces.

The second position is a full time tenure track or tenured Professorship in History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism at the assistant, associate, or full professor level.
We are seeking an innovative scholar and teacher with expertise in modernisms within a global context. We prefer candidates who work on design processes in architecture and urban planning from an aesthetic, social, political, epistemological as well as visual studies perspective. Specialization is open to any geographic area. A focus on Africa would be particularly welcome. Attention to the theoretical position of contemporary scholarship is expected.

We are seeking applicants with a track record in research and teaching on the shaping of space in the urban-rural continuum, focused on current ecologic, political and architectural developments at the global level. Potential candidates should have a background in political and urban ecology, human geography or a related field and demonstrate a strong interest in methodological approaches to landscape research and planning.
