EADI eNewsletter #4/1 2021 | Knowledge Production and Learning & More

1st Issue April 2021

Editorial

Today’s newsletter has a thematic focus on knowledge production and learning – recommending a blog post, an event, a podcast and a video roundtable around this topic. And we are proud to invite you to our second distinguished guest lecture which will discuss Palestinian women’s search for an alternative approach to economic and social empowerment. Our very first virtual dialogue ins Spanish is now available to re-watch online, and our journal, the EJDR has a couple of new open access articles. Our publication picks today are all around Covid-19 recovery, and as usual, we’ve collected for you calls, vacancies and open online offers below.
Next Distinguished Guest Lecture on 21 April

In this lecture, Eileen Kuttab from Birzeit University, Palestine, will briefly describe the Israeli colonial project of dispossession and de-development on occupied Palestine, followed by a discussion on the emerging Palestinian Authority (PA) and its impact on the economy through a gender lens. She will explore how and why women were disempowered in the Palestinian labour market, and how their role in the national economy was affected. It will also reflect on how and why productive sectors came to be neglected, in the context of a patriarchal society biased towards unskilled male labour. Finally, it will highlight alternative development models, featuring examples of women who challenged and resisted the mainstream narrative of development. Read more and register

From our Blog: Knowledge Systems for Life on Earth
The authors of our latest blog post make the case that  » formalized knowledge systems such as universities, research institutes and education, must change in order to best support transformations to more sustainable societies ». Their research explores which concrete changes are actually needed and how they can be encouraged. They list eleven recommendations and conclude that the level of change needed should not be underestimated and « probably needs to be at the scales seen during the Age of Enlightenment and the scientific and technological revolution accompanying the second World War. » Read the post

How do we learn? Engaging with communities of knowledge and culture beyond academic spaces
In this podcast (or transcription) by the Convivial Thinking Collective, our Working Group on Post-and Decolonial Perspectives on Development, Parinita Shetty, Sayan Dey and Lata Narayanaswamy exchange about how collaboratively engaging with knowledge and activism with a wide range of people both within and outside institutionalised academic spaces is crucial. Highlight: Implications for Decolonizing ‘Development’

Imperatives and Practical Implications for Decolonizing ‘Development’
In this virtual roundtable three leading critical scholars discuss problems and pitfalls of the decolonization debate, especially with view of fundamental ‘development’ critiques and its entanglements with the histories of colonialism and coloniality. They explore what must be done to radically change structures, institutions, and spaces in research, teaching and practice that maintain racism, discrimination, exclusion, inequalities and injustices; and what a network of European scholars can (and cannot) achieve. They discuss practical implications and imperatives for action and/or withdrawal. Read more and watch the video
