2nd Issue November 2022 Editorial We return this week with a newsletter full of thought-provoking, if occasionally sombering, contemplations on various development topics. We have a publication highlight from our member institute the TNI about the impact of military spending on climate degradation. Mark your calendars for two upcoming events, one on 23 November to share perspectives on how to reduce academic flying, and the other on 24 November about open publishing as it pertains to the circulation of development knowledge. You can check out our new blog post which looks at development challenges with South Africa as an example. The thematic focus for this edition is governance of myriad development matters, and of course, we have the usual bouquet of calls, jobs and publications. Call for Abstracts: EADI CeSA General Conference 2023 A reminder that the call for submission of abstracts to 36 seed and 16 harvest panels at next year’s EADI CeSA General Conference is open! The deadline is 18 December 2022. Find all the information you need here.

The panel discussion centered on disaster risk, the impact of geopolitical crises on countries in the Global South and the issues South Africa as an example is confronted with. Read here.

Publication Highlight: Climate Collateral How military spending accelerates climate breakdown This report by the Transnational Institute examines the various ways in which military spending exacerbates the climate crisis. The report argues that investments in defence funnel critical resources away from solutions to climate change.Furthermore, military spending adds to GHG emissions, and worsens conflict situations creating more destabilisation for those most vulnerable to climate degradation. Highlight: AFD Editions Seminar on Open Publishing Our member the Agence Française de Développement is hosting a seminar on editorial challenges related to the dissemination of knowledge about development. The seminar will address open access and new distribution formats. You can find the agenda and sign up here.
