 2nd Issue April 2025EditorialAs our 50th anniversary celebration year comes to a close, we are happy to share the first open access articles from the related EJDR special issue, as well as our timeline gallery, which allows a quick glimpse at 50 years of EADI activities. We’ve got two new posts on our blog, both related to the discipline of Development Studies, and a new Social Protection Brief available. Our thematic focus is on extractivism and mining today.From our BlogFeeling the Colonial: Affective Decolonisation in Development Studies Classrooms“I hope for a world where International Development Studies cease to exist.” was the first line of my motivation letter to the University of Amsterdam (UvA). A provocation, yes – but also a belief. A way to signal that I saw the contradictions at the heart of the discipline – that a field born out of colonial legacies, and sustained by the hierarchies it claims to dismantle, cannot be reformed without eventually ceasing to exist. I thought this was an idealistic position. Global AND International Development against all InequalitiesIn this post, Alessandra Mezzadri argues that Development Studies needs both: the Global AND the International lens: « One of the central critiques against the notion of global development is its perceived universalism, supposedly erasing Global South histories and experiences. However, ‘universalizing’ and ‘globalizing’ are not synonyms. Universalism assumes one-size-fits-all approaches, obviously an undesirable approach to development. Yet, Development Studies as a discipline badly needs globalizing, that is moving beyond its Eurocentrism whilst maintaining an understanding of the power unevenness between the Global North and Global South. Read moreTo the blog overview
