Editorial

Today we’re happy to announce two new outputs from our « Share Your Decolonising Story » Project, as well as two new blog posts – one of which also resonates well with this project. We’re also pleased that the special jubilee issue of our journal, the EJDR is out, and that we’ve got extraordinarily many vacancies and calls to share. From our Blog “Vulnerable Research” in a Time of Climate Change and Coloniality « Rather than defending academia in its current form, this is an opportunity to demand that it finally changes to reflect the world as it is now, rather than as it was. Embracing vulnerable research moves our work to being part of the global acts of resistance, against climate change, imperialism and genocide. » Our latest blog discusses academia’s complicity in reproducing forms of harm it aims to study. The EU Deforestation Regulation: Chances for Inclusive Sustainable Forest and Agricultural Commodity Chains? « Although the private sector is far from doing enough reduce its share in deforestation, it could serve as a paramount lever if pushed towards effectively halting the expansion of the agricultural frontier into forests ». This blog explores challenges, opportunities and points of critique of the EU’s deforestation regulation. Read more

The Case for Global and International Development, and Against All Inequalities Everywhere The EJDR is EADI’s Journal. Read it Now! Post-Development From the Global South We’re proud and happy to see that one of the panels at our recent general conference has led to the publication of this book: « Post-Development from the Global South. Radical Alternatives or Ambivalent Engagements? », which takes reader from abstract post-development theory right into the heart of communities directly impacted by development. Read more

Book Launch Event on 16 May, 13.00 CET Post-development calls for radical alternatives to development, but how do these ideals sit with the day-to-day reality of marginalised communities struggling with poverty, precarity, and the deprivation of human rights? Join on zoom Featured EADI Member: Institute of Development Policy The Institute of Development Policy (IOB) at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, is the partner for our next General Conference! It is a multidisciplinary institute involved in academic teaching, scientific research and service to the community in the area of economic, political and social aspects of development policy.  Dossier on the Situation in Eastern DRC: In the light of the ongoing conflict in the Kivus it is worth mentioning that IOB has put together a dossier which brings together all pieces featuring its researchers with their analyses on the conflict from different angles Read more

Member Podcast Picks

As many of our members run interesting podcast, we will recommend some of them here from time to time. Today’s picks are: Between the Lines (IDS): The empathy fix: why poverty persists and how to change it. Listen Global Aid Rethink: The end of Aid? Listen Global Development Institute Podcast: Nigeria’s Urban Heritage Listen Highlight: Gender in African Cities This report by the African Cities Research Consortium (ACRC), led by the Global Development Institute, draws on ACRC’s political settlements framing to reveal the interconnectedness of youth, gender and insecurity with dynamic urban (in/formal) political processes that shape, and often constrain, opportunities for youth. We argue that using a youth-gender-(in)security lens, advanced by a lived experience methodology, can help to centre agency and counter harmful gender stereotypes. It draws together existing but disparate analyses to synthesise existing knowledge on the gender, youth and (in)security nexus in African cities and to propose future directions for research.
