EADI eNewsletter #12/1 2020 | Limited Call for Abstracts, Many Vacancies & More

Editorial

This is our last newsletter this year, and, apart from wishing you a good and healthy transition to the new year, we would like to draw your attention to the new limited call for abstracts for our General Conference next year. In addition, we’ve published an analysis of the situation of Indian migrant workers during the pandemic on our blog, and can announce the first virtual dialogue in 2021 on pandemic management in informal settlements in Kenya. Our journal, the EJDR, is looking for an early career editor, and our thematic focus today is on gender. If you’re looking for a job, we’ve got a large collection of vacancies at the bottom. See you all again in the new year, take care!

Hidden Hands of the City: How the Pandemic Unveiled the Systematic Neglect of Indian Migrant Workers
«
India’s national lockdown announced on 24 March 2020 came into force 12 hours later. Within a few days, the big story emerging from across Indian cities was of inter-state migrant workers, stranded in cities without work, money, or food. With no public transport, many started walking hundreds of kilometres to their homes. Those who stayed, exhausted their savings, and were further sucked into debt. The lockdown drew attention to the invisibility of migrant workers in the policy space, and the systematic neglect of their basic rights: at origin, in transit and at destination. » The author’s research emphasizes  » the need for transformative social protection that goes beyond handouts to recognize migrant workers as rights-bearing citizens. » Read more

Save the Date: Next Virtual Dialogue on 19 January
Modeling a Pandemic (COVID-19) Management Strategy for Urban Slums Using Social Geometry Framework, 19 January 2021, 11.00 CET
With Francis Onditi (School of International Relations and Diplomacy, Riara University, Kenya). Our central claim is that the containment strategy that was instituted to control spread of COVID-19 failed to recognize the socio-cultural and livelihood complexities of the urban slum residents. Drawing on social geometry approach in the analysis of human relations, we reveal some insights offered by our experiences in theorizing about public health intervention (PHI) and developing an alternative analytical framework to support a PHI strategy that is compatible with the swing-like lifestyle of residents in the informal settlements. Highlight: Measuring Vulnerabilities to Improve Aid Allocation
This book is part of a long research conducted at the Foundation for Studies and Research on International Development (FERDI) about vulnerability and the allocation of foreign aid. For more than 10 years, FERDI has argued that aid allocation should consider the structural vulnerability of recipient countries. FERDI has produced a variety of theoretical and practical work on the subject, and progress has been made in this area on the international scene. The book presents a conceptual framework to account for the different forms of vulnerability in the allocation process. Read more
