CODESRIA : Decolonial Critique of African Entrepreneurial Ecosystems by Sabelo J. Ndlovu-Gatsheni

Dear Colleague,

CODESRIA is pleased to share a new article in CODESRIA Bulletin Online (No. 13, September 2026): « Whose Ecosystem? Whose Africa? Whose Future? A Decolonial Critique of the Entrepreneurial Ecosystems Approach to African Development, » by Prof. Sabelo J. Ndlovu-Gatsheni, Canada Research Chair in Pluralistic Societies at the University of Calgary.

Responding to a 2023 paper on « Entrepreneurial Ecosystems for the Africa We Want, » Ndlovu-Gatsheni argues that development models rooted in Euro-North American theory remain fundamentally Eurocentric, even when their proponents attempt to « Africanise » them by incorporating local narratives. The article examines the genealogy, key concepts, methodology, and notable silences (particularly around gender and Indigenous knowledge) of this approach, and closes with four proposals for genuinely « reworlding » how development in Africa is imagined and researched.

This is a timely and thought-provoking contribution for anyone engaged with African development policy, decolonial theory, or the political economy of knowledge production.Regards,
