Editorial
Today we are happy to announce the kick-off of our new Distinguished Guest Lecture Series. High-profile researchers from the Global South who have made significant contributions to their field will showcase their experience, together with a discussant from the EADI community. We hope that we will be able to announce further lectures soon! Not to forget the next event in our virtual dialogue series which is on narratives of injustice within environment-development intervention in Sub-Saharan Africa. We would also like to remind you that the limited call for abstracts for the upcoming EADI/ISS conference is still open until 15 February. And, of course, we’ve got some highlights, publications picks, calls, vacancies and online activities further below.

Youth, Citizenship and African Governance
Although young people are the majority in African countries, « around two-thirds of youth have inadequate education. Most live in “waithood”, a period of suspension between childhood and adulthood, often lacking full citizenship rights and excluded from representation within democratic forums. » The authors of our latest blog post from the Nordic Africa Institute call for a social contract that « offers citizenship as civil right and entitlement to social benefits to all. In return, based on mutual recognition, such civic liberties need to acknowledge and respect the obligations which come along. These include non-violent engagement with state authorities, who in return abstain from physical repression and other ways of intimidation as a pact on the way towards more social stability » Read the post

New: Distinguished Guest Lecture Series
On 18 February, Professor Madhura Swaminathan from the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore, will trace the trajectory of growth of Indian agriculture over the last five decades. From the mid-1960s through the 1980s, rapid growth in production and productivity of food grain, rice and wheat resulted in big gains in output and reduced dependence on imports to meet domestic consumption requirements. The trajectory has been more uneven in the 1990s and after. The lecture argues that there are huge problems that beset agrarian India, arising out of inequalities across crops, regions and classes. In particular, the policies of the last two decades have neglected small farmers who still constitute the vast majority of rural cultivators. Read more and register
Next Virtual Dialogue: 11 February
Susannah Sallu from the Sustainability Research Institute of the University of Leeds, UK, will draw out consistent narratives of injustice within environment-development intervention, based on her recent portfolio of case study research on climate change, conservation and agricultural development intervention, largely conducted in Tanzania. She will also reflect on evidence emerging from literary reviews on social innovation and resilience to propose possible options forward to (re)negotiate rural livelihood and landscape resilience.
Susannah Sallu is currently Associate Professor of Environment & Development in the Sustainability Research Institute and School of Earth & Environment at the University of Leeds. Read more and register

The consequences of COVID-19 will shape European policies and politics for years to come. Already before the pandemic, the European Union (EU) was facing difficulties in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and making progress on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Europe is lacking behind particularly on the SDGs related to agriculture, climate change and biodiversity and in strengthening convergence of living standards across EU member states. Read more
Highlight: Wellbeing Economics
Amidst rising global inequality, migration, climate change, health pandemics, and deepening poverty, it is time to redirect our economy towards more sustainable and socially just processes and outcomes. In her book Wellbeing Economics Nicky Pouw puts forward a new framework that places human wellbeing at the centre, instead of economic growth. She postulates ten reasons why economics should change to remain a relevant discipline and develops a Wellbeing Economic Matrix (WEM) to implement this approach.
