EADI eNewsletter #2/2 2021 | Virtual Dialogue in Spanish, Extractivism & More

2nd Issue February 2021

Editorial

Today we are happy to present our very first virtual dialogue in Spanish language, with more to come, also in French. This is a first step to help counter the dominance of English in the field, and an attempt to delve into the rich heritage of Spanish– and French-speaking thinkers. We are also very pleased that the International Master’s Programme at our premium member Noragric has received its EADI/IAC accreditation. Today’s blog posts critically analyses the underlying assumptions of the UNDP Human Development Reports, and our thematic focus today is on extractivism and natural resources. As usual, we’ve collected interesting online events by our members over the next  two weeks, in addition to the calls, vacancies and publication picks further below.
From our Blog: Why Read the Human Development Reports?
Why Read the Human Development Reports of the UNDP?
In this post Juan Telleria argues that the UNDP reports are « sheer example of the essentialist ontological assumptions that, for more than seven decades, conditioned and limited our understanding of development and global issues. » They help to « detect and expose the contradictions and limitations of current development debates » and can be interpreted as « a discursive instrument created for a very precise purpose: the rearticulation of the logics of development to adapt them to the needs of the new unipolar hegemony. » Read the post

Recent years have seen an increase in the number and intensity of armed conflicts, fuelled in particular by an increase in the number and intensity of terrorist incidents and an increasingly important part played by organised crime. These conflicts are the result of a variety of economic, social, demographic, climatic and geographic factors.
