EADI eNewsletter #3/2 2021 | Climate Adaptation and Development, Register for #Solidarity2021 & More

2nd Issue March 2021

Editorial

We are happy that already 100 participants have taken the opportunity to register for our General Conference in July and would like to remind you that the early bird registration fee is only available until 18 April! Our latest blog post sheds the light on negative side-effects of climate adaptation projects, and a new special issue of our Journal, the EJDR, is out hot from the press. Apart from the usual publication picks, vacancies and online offers by members, we’ve got two publication highlights today: one of Africa’s post COVID-19 recovery, and one on assessing unpaid care work. Our thematic focus this time is on work and labour.
From our Blog: Climate Adaptation and (Mal-)Development
Why Does Climate Adaptation End Up Repeating, Rather Than Rethinking, Old Development Mistakes?
The authors of our latest blog post argue that « many adaptation-interventions reproduce both the development problems and the skewed power relations that have contributed to vulnerability in the first place ». With the terms « retrofitting, accumulation by adaptation, and coercive transformation« , they describe some of the mechanisms that lead to such negative outcomes from adaptation interventions, and conclude that « adaptation should be an arena for learning and experimenting with new ways of how to explicitly support social justice in a context of long-term environmental change. Such learning will only be possible if we are prepared to use that arena for critically rethinking development ». Read the post

New EADI Working Group
We are pleased to announce the constitution of a new EADI Working Group on Portuguese-speaking countries, which have traditionally been considered lagging behind relatively to their peers. Often, their common institutional background has been identified as one of the reasons for their underachievement and underdevelopment. However, they have also been under-researched in scientific literature in English and, in particular, in Development Studies. This working group intends to address this gap. Read more

Highlight: Shaping Africa’s Post Covid Recovery
Open Access Book published at the Graduate Institute, Geneva:
With the exception of some flashpoints in Northern and Southern Africa, the continent has been largely spared from the direct health effect of Covid-19. However, the African economy has been significantly hurt by the economic consequences. This eBook summarises recent research on the economic effect of the Covid-19 pandemic in the continent covering a wide array of topics focusing on the response of firms, households, governments, and international organisations. Highlight: Toolkit For Assessing Unpaid Care Work
This is a participatory toolkit developed by the Institute of Development Studies for understanding unpaid care work and its distribution within local communities and families. Together, these tools provide a way of ascertaining and capturing research participants’ understanding of women’s unpaid care work – giving special attention to the lived experiences of carrying out unpaid care work and receiving care. Please note that these tools were developed and used in a pre-Covid-19 era and that they are designed to be implemented through face-to-face interactions rather than online means. Read more
