Retours sur nos derniers événements | Look back on our last events “Beyond Binaries. Global circuits of influence, exchange and knowledge production”, 18-19 September 2025, University of the Witwatersrand Organisée par l’IRD et la School of Social Sciences de l’Université du Witwatersrand, en partenariat avec l’IFAS-Recherche, ces trois journées d’étude visaient à réfléchir au relationnel Sud-Nord dans la production et la circulation des savoirs. Cet événement, au cours duquel Annael Le Poullennec, directrice de l’IFAS-Recherche, a évoqué sa politique de financement des terrains, a mis en avant la centralité de ce rouage de la recherche en sciences humaines et sociales dans une approche pragmatique des ambitions décoloniales. L’événement et la collaboration IRD-Université du Witwatersrand-IFAS-Recherche a donné lieu à un programme commun de bourses de terrain destiné aux doctorant·es sudafricain·es, dont les 11 lauréat·es pour 2026 sont à retrouver ici. Organized by IRD and the Wits School of Social Sciences, in partnership with IFAS-Research, these three days of seminar aimed to reflect on South-North relations in the production and circulation of knowledge. During this event, Annael Le Poullennec, Director of IFAS-Research, presented the institute’s fieldwork funding policy, and discussions emphasised the central role of fieldwork in humanities and social sciences research within a pragmatic approach to decolonial ambitions. The event and the IRD–University of the Witwatersrand–IFAS-Research collaboration resulted in a joint programme of fieldwork grants for South African doctoral candidates. Cosmo-Art Conference on Rock Art “Rock Art Site Management in Southern Africa: Towards a Cosmopolitan Approach”, 30 Nov. – 06 Dec. 2025, Sol Plaatje University   Le colloque international marquant la fin du programme Cosmo-Art a rassemblé une soixantaine de chercheur·ses en art rupestre, archéologie, géographie, conservation et gestion du patrimoine, tourisme, ainsi que des professionnels de ces secteurs. Après une performance de la compagnie Amadla Dança Teatro ZA, croisant cultures Khwe Xam et Yoruba, le colloque a été ouvert par les conférences inaugurales. La semaine a ensuite été structurée autour de six sessions thématiques invitant les participant·es à des discussions interdisciplinaires autour des enjeux liés à la préservation, à la gestion et à la valorisation des sites d’art rupestre. Ces enjeux ont par ailleurs pu être abordés concrètement lors d’une excursion et d’un atelier de réflexion organisée à Wonderwerk Cave. Les actes du colloque feront l’objet d’un numéro spécial de la revue Southern African Humanities. The international conference concluding the Cosmo-art programme gathered sixty researchers in rock art, archaeology, geography, heritage preservation and management, tourism, as well as professionals from these sectors. After a performance by Amadla Dança Teatro ZA, weaving together Khwe Xam and Yoruba cultures, the conference was opened by keynote speakers. The week was then organised around six thematic panels, inviting participants to engage in multidisciplinary discussions on the overlapping issues involved in the preservation, management and valorisation of rock art sites. These challenges were concretely explored during an excursion and workshop at Wonderwerk Cave. The conference proceedings will be published as a special issue of the Southern African Humanities journal. 30 ans de l’IFAS-Recherche | IFAS-Research 30 Years En 2025, l’IFAS-Recherche fêtait 30 ans de recherche en Afrique australe. Réalisée à cette occasion, cette vidéo présente l’IFAS-Recherche et met en lumière quelques exemples de projets soutenus par l’IFAS-Recherche au cours de ces 30 années et menés par nos partenaires de longue date. In 2025, IFAS-Research celebrated 30 years of research on and in Southern Africa. On that occasion, this video presents IFAS-Research and highlights a few examples of projects supported by IFAS-Research and carried out by our long-term partners. Afrique, sur la piste des premiers hommes, documentaire sur les travaux menés par Laurent Bruxelles (in French) Dans le cadre de leur projet Homan Origins, Laurent Bruxelles (INRAP & IFAS-Recherche), Frédéric Swierczynski (spéléonaute) et leurs équipes internationales de recherche ont été suivis par ARTE sur leurs terrains en Afrique australe. Le documentaire Afrique, sur la piste des premiers hommes, est disponible en streaming sur le site d’ARTE jusqu’au 26 février 2026 et sera diffusé à la télévision (en France) le vendredi 27 février à 03h05. Résumé : Des humains vivaient-ils sur l’entièreté du territoire de l’Afrique australe au Paléolithique ? Dans le cadre du projet « Human Origins », un archéologue et un spéléologue mènent l’enquête au coeur des entrailles de la Terre. Où, précisément, les premiers hommes sont-ils apparus ? C’est la question à laquelle l’archéologue Laurent Bruxelles, de l’Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (Inrap), et le spéléonaute Frédéric Swierczynski s’emploient à répondre. Grâce aux compétences hors normes de ce dernier, capable de plonger à plus de 250 mètres de profondeur, les deux scientifiques sondent, de la Namibie au Botswana en passant par le Malawi, les gouffres les plus dangereux du monde à la recherche de brèches, ces « amas de matières minérales qui agissent comme un ciment naturel et protègent les fossiles de l’érosion », précise Laurent Bruxelles. Suivis par la caméra d’Anthony Binst, les chercheurs explorent ainsi les entrailles de la Terre pour percer les secrets qu’elles recèlent. Matériaux & terrains en études africaines | Call for papers « Sound Recordings », Sources. Materials & Fields in African Studies Nous avons le plaisir de vous adresser un appel à contributions pour un numéro sur le thème « Prises de son », coordonné par Charlotte Grabli (CNRS, Centre d’histoire sociale des mondes contemporains) et Aïssatou Mbodj-Pouye (CNRS, Institut des mondes africains), à paraître dans la revue Sources. Terrains et méthodes en études africaines. Ce numéro de Sources propose de rassembler des analyses de différentes disciplines portant sur des sources sonores produites dans les Afriques. Issus de collections anciennes ou produits aujourd’hui, les matériaux audio reçoivent un intérêt croissant des études africaines, en particulier grâce à la valorisation, par des institutions, des chercheur·ses, des militant·es, des artistes, de fonds sonores et audiovisuels oubliés ou difficiles d’accès. Enregistrés depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, ces objets sonores sont extrêmement divers : collectes de langues, chants et musique, enregistrements de terrain, archives radiophoniques, disques commerciaux, bande-son de films, enregistrements de procès, de discours politiques, sermons, lettres-cassettes, vocaux de messagerie numérique etc. Particulièrement dans le cas de contextes africains et diasporiques, il importe de développer des méthodes d’écoute et d’analyse capables d’appréhender le caractère multidimensionnel des enregistrements, les rapports de pouvoir et les formes d’agentivité marquant les processus de production, de circulation et d’archivage. We are pleased to announce a call for papers for a special issue on the theme “Sound recordings,” coordinated by Charlotte Grabli (CNRS, Centre d’histoire sociale des mondes contemporains) and Aïssatou Mbodj-Pouye (CNRS, Institut des mondes africains), to be published in the journal Sources. Materials & Fieldwork in African Studies. This issue of Sources ambitions to bring together multiple disciplinary perspectives on one or more sound sources produced in Africa. Whether issued from old collections or produced today, audio materials are attracting growing interest in African studies, particularly thanks to the promotion by institutions, researchers, activists and artists of forgotten or difficult-to-access sound and audiovisual collections. Recorded since the late 19th century, these sound objects are extremely diverse: linguistic material, songs and music, field recordings, radio archives, commercial records, film soundtracks, recordings of trials, political speeches, sermons, cassette letters, digital voicemails, etc. Particularly in the case of African and diasporic contexts, it is important to develop methods of listening and analysing that can grasp the multidimensional nature of recordings, the power relations and forms of agency that mark the processes of production, circulation and archiving. Sont éligibles des travaux soutenus en France entre le 1er janvier 2025 et le 31 décembre 2025. Appel à candidatures – Formation « Guiding visitors at rock art sites » de l’IRN RAHMSA | Call for applications – IRN RAHMSA training workshop « Guiding visitors at rock art sites » The IRN RAHMSA, an international collaboration network specialised in spreading of up-to-date techniques and methodologies in rock art studies, invites applications for a one-week training workshop in guiding visitors at rock art sites. The workshop will take place on September 14-21, 2026, in the Masunga area, and it will include site visits, lectures and group work. Applications are open to graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, heritage practitioners working with rock art and people involved in local sustainable cultural tourism linked with rock art.
