| Alors que l’été boréal et l’hiver austral battent leur plein, plusieurs changements s’annoncent à l’IFAS-Recherche. Léa Jobard quittera ses fonctions de chargée de projets et de la communication le 30 juin. Au nom de l’équipe de l’UMIFRE, je la félicite et la remercie chaleureusement pour son travail structurant et son investissement personnel et professionnel. Pour lui succéder, nous aurons le plaisir d’accueillir Amayelle Pendeoro, qui reprendra le poste à partir du 9 juillet. Par ailleurs, je quitterai moi-même mes fonctions en août 2027, au terme d’un mandat de quatre ans. J’invite les collègues intéressé·es à consulter la fiche de poste et les conditions d’éligibilité de ce poste stimulant et passionnant. Notre prochaine newsletter vous parviendra en septembre. D’ici-là, l’équipe de l’IFAS-Recherche vous souhaite un bon été, ou un bon hiver. As summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere are in full swing, several changes are forthcoming at IFAS-Research. Léa Jobard will be leaving her position as project and communications officer on June 30. In the name of IFAS-Research, I want to thank her for her important work and outstanding commitment. We will have the pleasure of welcoming her successor, Amayelle Pendeoro, who will take up the role starting July 9. In addition, I will be stepping down from my position in August 2027, after completing the four-year mandate. I invite interested colleagues to consult the job description and eligibility criteria here. Our next newsletter will reach you in September. | Dans le cadre du congrès annuel de l’association sud-africaine de sociologie (SASA), le programme « Beyond Binaries », mené par la Wits School of Social Sciences, l’IRD, le CNRS et l’IFAS-Recherche, organise cinq panels dédiés à la présentation de short papers de doctorant·es proposant une analyse réflexive de leur travail de terrain, en préparation du prochain colloque Beyond Binaries (9 – 11 septembre, Université du Witwatersrand – informations à venir dans la newsletter de septembre et sur nos réseaux sociaux). Les inscriptions au congrès de la SASA sont ouvertes sur ce site. As part of the South African Sociological Association (SASA) annual congress, the “Beyond Binaries” programme, led by the Wits School of Social Sciences, IRD, CNRS and IFAS-Research, is organising five panels dedicated to the presentation of short papers by doctoral students, reflecting on their PhD fieldwork, and in preparation for the upcoming Beyond Binaries conference (9–11 September, University of the Witwatersrand – further information will be shared in our September newsletter and on our social media platforms). | Seminar « From Souss to Sofala, on foot. Global histories of medieval Africa » – 2 June 2026 |
| Le 2 juin 2026, le Wits History Workshop et l’IFAS-Recherche ont invité l’historien et ancien directeur de l’IFAS-Recherche Adrien Delmas à présenter ses travaux sur la période médiévale africaine. À partir des exemples de deux forteresses portugaises construites en 1505 dans le Souss (Maroc) et à Sofala (Mozambique), cette présentation avançait l’hypothèse d’une troisième forme de mondialisation africaine, interne au continent, et perceptible grâce à l’archéologie des « routes fossiles ». On June 2, 2026, the Wits History Workshop and IFAS-Research invited the historian and former IFAS-Research director Adrien Delmas to present his work on the African medieval period. Based on the examples of two Portuguese fortresses built in 1505 in the Souss (Morrocco) and at Sofala (Mozambique), this presentation proposed the hypothesis of a third form of African globalization, internal to the continent, and discernible through the archaeology of “fossil routes”. |

| Jeudi 4 juin dernier, l’IFAS-Recherche et le Wits History Workshop ont organisé un atelier de recherche sur la question des archives visuelles, des représentations et des mémoires des mouvements étudiants de 1976 et Fees Must Falls. L’événement a rassemblé des chercheur·ses, réalisateur·ices, artistes, archivistes et activistes ainsi qu’un public d’une quarantaine de personnes, composé d’universitaires, d’étudiant·es et d’ancien·nes membres de ces mouvements étudiants. Les réflexions étaient organisées autour de trois thématiques : 1) la collecte, la conservation, et la critique des archives de 1976 ; 2) le rôle du film documentaire dans la réappropriation, l’accès et le partage des archives visuelles ; 3) la constitution d’une archive de Fees Must Fall (2015-2016) et le rôle joué par les codes visuels du mouvement. Alors que nous commémorons les 50 ans des soulèvements de Soweto et les 10 ans de Fees Must Fall, nous souhaitions, avec cette conversation, contribuer à décortiquer les préoccupations partagées par différents milieux (universitaire, film documentaire, archives, etc.) concernant les archives visuelles de ces mouvements de contestations, leur (re)constitution, et leurs usages au fil du temps dans la comémoration et la représentation des mouvements étudiants sud-africains. On Thursday, June 4th, IFAS-Research and the Wits History workshop organized a research workshop on the question of visual archives, representations and memories of student movements of the 1976 uprisings and of the Fees Must Fall movements. The day brought together researchers, filmmakers, artists, archivists and activists in conversation with an audience of about 40 people, including academic communities, as well as participants in both student movements and creatives. We organized our thoughts around three conversations : firstly, on curating, complementing and critiquing the archive of 1976; secondly, on the role of documentary filmmaking in reframing the visual archive, as well as obtaining and sharing access to that archive; thirdly, on how to constitute an archive of Fees Must Fall (2015-2016) and the role played by visual languages of the movement. As we commemorate 50 years of the Soweto uprisings and 10 years since Fees Must Fall, we hope this conversation contributed to unpacking common preoccupations shared inside and outside academia on visual archive(s) of the protests, on its (re)constitution and on its uses across time in re-membering and re-presenting South African student movements. |

Mardi 16 juin dernier, l’IFAS-Recherche a co-organisé la projection du film L’indomptable feu du printemps, de Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese. Ce long métrage lesothan a été présenté en partenariat avec le programme Ciné-dialogues Afrique, conçu et coordonné par Anna Bruzzone (historienne du cinéma à l’IMAF). À l’issue de la projection, Anna Bruzzone et la directrice de l’IFAS-Recherche, Annael Le Poullennec, ont menéavec Lemohang Mosese, présent lors de l’événement, une conversation sur les enjeux esthétiques et politiques du film, et les figures de résistance que celui-ci présente. Cette discussion (en anglais et en français) sera prochainement disponible sur la plateforme Canal-U ainsi que sur la chaîne YouTube de l’IFAS-Recherche. |
| On Tuesday, June 16th, IFAS-Research coorganized a screening of This is not a Burial, it’s a Resurrection, by Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese. The Lesothan feature film was shown in the context of and in partnership with Ciné-dialogues Afrique, a film programme curated by Dr. Anna Bruzzone (film historian affiliated with IMAF). After the screening, Anna Bruzzone and IFAS-Research director Dr. Annael Le Poullennec engaged in a conversation with Lemohang Mosese, present at the screening, about the film’s aesthetic and political dimensions, as well as the figures of resistance it portrays. The conversation (in English and French) will soon be available on the Canal-U platform and the IFAS-Research YouTube channel. |
