Le colloque « Notes from the Field: Ethnography and Extraction in Southern Africa » abordera les questions de positionnalité, de représentation, de pouvoir et de sécurité des chercheur·ses, à travers des panels consacrés aux méthodes de la recherche et à la positionnalité, ainsi qu’une table ronde sur la sécurité des chercheur·ses dans les sciences humaines et les sciences. Lieu : WISER Seminar Room, Braamfontein East Campus The Beyond Binaries project, a collaboration between the School of Social Sciences at Wits University, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and IFAS-Research, brings together postgraduate students and emerging researchers for two days of discussion on fieldwork and knowledge production. The colloquium “Notes from the Field: Ethnography and Extraction in Southern Africa” explores questions of positionality, representation, power and researcher’s safety, with panels on methods & ethics and positionality, as well as a roundtable on researcher’s safety across the Humanities and Sciences. Venue: WISER Seminar Room, Braamfontein East Campus Workshop international « Guiding visitors at rock art sites » – IRN RHAMSA – 14 au 21 septembre 2026, Masunga, Francistown, Botswana / International Workshop “Guiding visitors at rock art siites” – IRN RHAMSA – 14 to 21 September 2026, Masunga, Francistown, Botswana  Le workshop international “guiding visitors at rock art sites”, organisé dans le cadre de l’IRN (international research network) RAHMSA (Rock Art Heritage Management in Southern Africa) financé par le CNRS, rassemble des chercheur·ses du Botswana, de France, de Namibie, d’Afrique du Sud et du Zimbabwe afin de partager leurs travaux sur la gestion du patrimoine d’art rupestre et le tourisme. Alliant conférences, visites de sites et travaux de groupe, cet atelier explorera les moyens d’accompagner les publics tout en préservant les sites d’art rupestre, en impliquant les communautés locales, en développant des récits inclusifs et en créant des expériences de visite durables. The international workshop “guiding visitors at rock art sites,” organized as part of the IRN (International Research Network) RAHMSA (Rock Art Heritage Management in Southern Africa) funded by the CNRS, brings together researchers from Botswana, France, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe to share analyses on rock art heritage management and tourism. Combining lectures, site visits, and group work, this workshop will explore ways to guide visitors while preserving rock art sites, involving local communities, developing inclusive narratives, and creating sustainable visitor experiences. Séminaire recherche-création – Workshop et présentation au Nigeria – 21 au 24 septembre / Research-Creation Seminar – Workshop and Presentation in Nigeria – 21 to 24 September  Le 24 septembre, l’IFAS-Recherche et l’IFRA-Nigeria organisent une conférence performée à l’Alliance française de Lagos, avec le soutien de l’Institut français et de Débat des Idées 2026. Cette conférence s’inscrit dans le prolongement d’un atelier de trois jours organisés à l’IFRA-Nigeria, à Ibadan (du 21 au 23 septembre), qui réunira un groupe de chercheur·ses et d’artistes-chercheur·ses venu·es d’Afrique du Sud, du Nigeria et du Ghana. Cet atelier présentiel en groupe restreint fait suite à un séminaire d’une journée organisé à Johannesburg en 2025 et à une année d’échanges en ligne sur les questions, les méthodologies et les projets de recherche-création, impliquant des participant·es d’Afrique de l’Ouest et d’Afrique australe. Nous nous réjouissons de nous rencontrer en personne, d’approfondir nos réflexions collectives et de les partager. On September 24th, IFAS-Research and IFRA-Nigeria are organizing a performed conference at Alliance Française in Lagos, with the support of Institut Français and Débat des Idées 2026. The presentation will come This in-person closed-group workshop follows after a one-day seminar in Johannesburg in 2025 and a year of online conversation on research-creation questions, methodologies and projects between West and South African participants. Retours sur nos derniers événements | Look back on our last events 9e Conférence sur les études africaines en France – 29 juin au 2 juillet 2026, Aubervilliers / 9th Conference on African Studies in France – 29 June to 2 July 2026, AubervilliersL’IFAS-Recherche était présent aux Rencontres des Études Africaines en France (REAF), qui se sont tenues du 29 juin au 2 juillet 2026. Le 1er juillet, la table ronde L’international au cœur de la recherche : rencontres avec les directions des unités de recherche en Afrique a réuni les directions des UMIFRE implantées sur le continent africain (Tunisie, Maroc, Nigeria, Égypte, Afrique du Sud, Éthiopie, Soudan et Kenya), mettant en lumière le rôle de ces instituts dans la recherche et les collaborations scientifiques en Afrique. Le 2 juillet, le programme de recherche-création mené par l’IFAS-Recherche et l’IFRA-Nigeria a également été présenté par Pauline Guinard, directrice de l’IFRA-Nigeria, et Annael Le Poullennec, directrice de l’IFAS-Recherche, dans l’un des ateliers consacrés aux méthodologies de recherche-création. IFAS-Research took part in the Rencontres des Études Africaines en France (REAF), held from 29 June to 2 July 2026. On 1 July, the roundtable International Research at the Heart of Research: Meetings with the Directors of Research Units in Africa brought together the directors of UMIFREs based across the African continent (Tunisia, Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya), highlighting the role of these institutes in supporting research and scientific collaboration in Africa. On 2 July, the research-creation programme jointly organised by IFAS-Research and IFRA-Nigeria was also presented by Pauline Guinard, Director of IFRA-Nigeria, and Annael Le Poullennec, Director of IFAS-Research, in one of several panels on creative research methodologies. Panels du projet Beyond Binaries à la conférence annuelle de la South African Sociological Association – 6 au 9 juillet 2026 / Panels of the Beyond Binaries Project at the South African Sociological Association Annual Conference – 6 to 9 July 2026  Du 6 au 9 juillet 2026, l’IFAS-Recherche et l’IRD en Afrique australe ont participé au congrès annuel de la South African Sociological Association (SASA), organisé à l’Université du Witwatersrand autour du thème Solidarity: Possibilities and Pitfalls. Dans le cadre du programme de recherche Beyond Binaries, porté conjointement par la School of Social Sciences de Wits, l’IRD et l’IFAS-Recherche, onze doctorant·es des universités de Johannesburg, Pretoria et du Witwatersrand, aux côtés de chercheur·ses en sciences sociales, ont présenté leurs travaux au sein de huit panels. Les échanges ont porté sur des thématiques variées, notamment les migrations, les restitutions foncières post-apartheid, les archives coloniales, les plateformes numériques, les mobilités et les frontières, tout en invitant les participant·es à porter un regard réflexif sur leurs terrains et sur les rapports Sud-Nord dans la production des savoirs. Les communications feront l’objet d’un numéro Varia de la revue Lesedi, à paraître en 2027. From 6 to 9 July 2026, IFAS-Research and IRD Southern Africa took part in the annual conference of the South African Sociological Association (SASA), held at the University of the Witwatersrand around the theme Solidarity: Possibilities and Pitfalls. As part of the Beyond Binaries research programme, jointly led by Wits’ School of Social Sciences, IRD and IFAS-Research, eleven PhD candidates from the universities of Johannesburg, Pretoria and the Witwatersrand, alongside social science researchers, presented their research across eight panels. Covering topics including migration, post-apartheid land restitution, colonial archives, digital platforms, mobility and borders, the panels provided an opportunity for researchers to critically reflect on their fieldwork and on North-South dynamics in knowledge production. The contributions will be published in a Varia issue of the Lesedi journal in 2027. La conférence a ouvert un espace de réflexion et de dialogue sur les héritages de l’apartheid et la manière dont ses logiques continuent de structurer les sociétés, les politiques et les imaginaires, en Afrique du Sud comme au-delà de ses frontières. From 29 to 31 July 2026, IFAS-Research supported the 3rd Towards Critical Apartheid Studies Conference, held at the University of the Witwatersrand under the theme “Apartheid After South Africa: Legacies, Logics and New Frontiers”. The conference provided a space for dialogue and critical reflection on the legacies of apartheid and the ways in which its logics continue to shape societies, politics and imaginaries, both within and beyond South Africa. As a partner of the event, IFAS-Research contributed to this collective reflection on the contemporary forms and enduring legacies of apartheid. Conférence « Rethinking Disability: Participation, Equity and Work » – 3 août 2026 / Conference “Rethinking Disability: Participation, Equity and Work” – 3 August 2026  Le 6 août 2026, l’IFAS-Recherche a soutenu le colloque international Rethinking Disability: Participation, Equity and Work, organisé à l’Université de Johannesburg dans le cadre de l’appel à manifestation scientifique de l’IFAS-Recherche. Réunissant chercheur·ses et militant·es français·es et sud-africain·es, le colloque a ouvert un espace de réflexion et de dialogue sur les enjeux de participation, d’inclusion et d’exclusion des personnes en situation de handicap, en explorant notamment les liens entre handicap, emploi, pauvreté multidimensionnelle et participation sociale.On 6 August 2026, IFAS-Research supported the international colloquium Rethinking Disability: Participation, Equity and Work, held at the University of Johannesburg as part of the IFAS-Research Scientific Initiative Call. Bringing together French and South African scholars and activists, the colloquium provided a space for reflection and dialogue on the participation, inclusion and exclusion of people with disabilities, exploring in particular the links between disability, employment, multidimensional poverty and social participation.
