| Décembre 2025 | December 2025 Actualités de l’UMIFRE | Latest news Bienvenue à Laurent Bruxelles | Welcome Laurent Bruxelles Impliqué depuis près de 20 ans dans les recherches sur l’aire du Cradle of Humakind, Laurent Bruxelles rejoint l’équipe scientifique de l’IFAS-Recherche, auquel il sera affilié pour une durée de deux à quatre ans, afin de se consacrer à deux activités principales : Involved for nearly 20 years in research on the Cradle of Humankind area, Laurent Bruxelles is joining the scientific team of IFAS-Research, with which he will be affiliated for two to four years, in order to focus on two main activities:  1️⃣ Développer ses recherches sur la question des origines du genre Homo en reprenant les stratigraphies et les datations des principaux sites d’Afrique du Sud qui ont livré des restes d’hominines anciens, et en poursuivant la recherche de nouveaux sites dans les grottes de Zambie, du Zimbabwe, du Mozambique et du Botswana. Cette année, le programme de recherche qu’il dirige dans les grottes de Gcwihaba a d’ailleurs remporté le prix de spéléologie Habe. Découvrez le détail d’une de ses missions de terrain au Botswana sur cette page, cette page, ou dans ce documentaire d’Arte. 2️⃣ Assurer la direction scientifique d’un nouveau Centre International de Recherche (IRC), partenariat entre le CNRS et l’Université du Witwatersrand. Structuré autour de disciplines comme les mathématiques, la physique, l’environnement et les paléosciences, l’IRC a pour objectif le renforcement des partenariats et le développement de nouveaux axes de recherche, notamment dans des approches interdisciplinaires. 1️⃣ Developing his research on the origins of the genus Homo by revisiting the stratigraphy and dating of the main South African sites that have yielded early hominin remains, and by continuing the search for new sites in caves in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Botswana. This year, the research programme he leads in the Gcwihaba caves was awarded the Habe Speleology Prize. Structured around disciplines such as mathematics, physics, environmental sciences, and paleosciences, the IRC aims to strengthen partnerships and develop new research avenues, particularly through interdisciplinary approaches. As we celebrate three decades of multifarious projects in the social sciences and the humanities, Lesedi, IFAS-Research online journal, has released a new “varia” volume entitled From the field: Ongoing projects, questions and reflections, to spotlight research currently undertaken by long-term collaborators as well as young researchers. This volume brings together political scientists, anthropologists, geographers, archaeologists, and literary scholars, and foregrounds a patchwork of projects and reflections supported by IFAS-Research at different stages of their growth. Nos événements scientifiques | Our scientific events Siyanda Kobokana’s Research-Creation residency on « Ecological Listening – Sensory Histories of Climate Change and Media in South Africa » Siyanda Kobokana, a PhD student in history at the University of the Western Cape, has been in residence at the Fondation Fiminco and EUR ArTeC, in Greater Paris, from October 20 to December 20, 2025, as part of our creative research residency program, a partnership between IFAS-Research, EUR ArTeC and Fondation Fiminco. During the residency, Siyanda has been developing his PhD project, “Ecological Listening: A Sonic Method for Climate Justice from the Margins”. The project explores how sound—whether carried through floods, radios, voice notes, or everyday environments—shapes public understanding of the climate crisis. It brings together sensory history, community media, and climate justice in order to foreground the experiences of communities who are often left out of mainstream climate conversations. Kobokana As part of his residency, Siyanda will present his work at two events taking place at the Fondation Fiminco (Romainville): Farewell Listening Event – 6 December, from 11.00: Siyanda and other fellow artists in various disciplines will host a special farewell event, which will feature an intimate sound exhibition that traces the early stages of Siyanda’s research journey. The installation includes recordings from nearby running rivers, the changing textures of rain, the subtle movements of the Fiminco garden, and the recorded reflections and voices of students and collaborators. BarTeC Event – December 18, 18.30-21.00: During a BarTec event titled “Listening to Climate Change: Sound, Knowledge and Decolonial Futures”, organised by the EUR ArTeC, Siyanda will present a further iteration of his work, alongside Diane Schuh, with Alto Clark joining as an invited artist. Together, they will open a shared space for thinking about how listening practices across art, research, and everyday life might shift how climate change is understood and felt. Retours sur nos derniers événements | Look back on our last events VIAD Thought Dialogues, 2-4 September 2025  Dans le cadre du Volume III du projet The Imagined New (or, what happens when History is a Catastrophe?), le Centre de recherche VIAD a organisé des thought dialogues à Johannesburg, en partenariat avec le Ruth J. Simmons Centre for the Study of Slavery and Justice et en collaboration avec l’IFAS-Recherche. Ce programme de trois jours, « Confronting Violence and Catastrophe: Power, Grief and Hope », a réuni un groupe d’artistes et de chercheur·es, invité·es à dialoguer autour des imaginaires de la catastrophe en recherche et dans les arts. Les prochaines étapes prévoient notamment la publication d’un ouvrage. As Part Two of the multi-modal Volume III project of the Imagined New (or, what happens when History is a Catastrophe?), VIAD Research Centre hosted thought dialogues, in Johannesburg, in partnership with the Ruth J. Simmons Centre for the Study of Slavery and Justice and in collaboration with IFAS-Research. This three-day programme, “Confronting Violence and Catastrophe: Power, Grief and Hope”, brought together a group of artists and researchers invited to engage in dialogue on the imaginaries of catastrophe in research and in the arts.
