Offre de Volontariat International – Chargé·e de projets scientifiques et de communication à l’IFAS-Recherche (in French)

L’IFAS-Recherche recrute sa ou son prochain·e volontaire international·e pour un an (renouvelable un an), à compter du 1er juillet 2026. Nous recrutons un·e candidat·e intéressé·e par l’Afrique du Sud/australe qui pourra assurer des missions de chargé·e de projets scientifiques et de chargé·e de communication. Appel à contributions « Prises de son », Sources. Matériaux & terrains en études africaines | Call for papers « Sound Recordings », Sources. Materials & Fields in African Studies

Nous avons le plaisir de vous adresser un appel à contributions pour un numéro sur le thème « Prises de son », coordonné par Charlotte Grabli (CNRS, Centre d’histoire sociale des mondes contemporains) et Aïssatou Mbodj-Pouye (CNRS, Institut des mondes africains), à paraître dans la revue Sources. Terrains et méthodes en études africaines. Ce numéro de Sources propose de rassembler des analyses de différentes disciplines portant sur des sources sonores produites dans les Afriques. Issus de collections anciennes ou produits aujourd’hui, les matériaux audio reçoivent un intérêt croissant des études africaines, en particulier grâce à la valorisation, par des institutions, des chercheur·ses, des militant·es, des artistes, de fonds sonores et audiovisuels oubliés ou difficiles d’accès. Enregistrés depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, ces objets sonores sont extrêmement divers : collectes de langues, chants et musique, enregistrements de terrain, archives radiophoniques, disques commerciaux, bande-son de films, enregistrements de procès, de discours politiques, sermons, lettres-cassettes, vocaux de messagerie numérique etc. Particulièrement dans le cas de contextes africains et diasporiques, il importe de développer des méthodes d’écoute et d’analyse capables d’appréhender le caractère multidimensionnel des enregistrements, les rapports de pouvoir et les formes d’agentivité marquant les processus de production, de circulation et d’archivage. We are pleased to announce a call for papers for a special issue on the theme “Sound recordings,” coordinated by Charlotte Grabli (CNRS, Centre d’histoire sociale des mondes contemporains) and Aïssatou Mbodj-Pouye (CNRS, Institut des mondes africains), to be published in the journal Sources. Materials & Fieldwork in African Studies. This issue of Sources ambitions to bring together multiple disciplinary perspectives on one or more sound sources produced in Africa. Whether issued from old collections or produced today, audio materials are attracting growing interest in African studies, particularly thanks to the promotion by institutions, researchers, activists and artists of forgotten or difficult-to-access sound and audiovisual collections. Recorded since the late 19th century, these sound objects are extremely diverse: linguistic material, songs and music, field recordings, radio archives, commercial records, film soundtracks, recordings of trials, political speeches, sermons, cassette letters, digital voicemails, etc. Particularly in the case of African and diasporic contexts, it is important to develop methods of listening and analysing that can grasp the multidimensional nature of recordings, the power relations and forms of agency that mark the processes of production, circulation and archiving. The call is available in English, in French, and in Portuguese. WomenAtWork Summer School, 1-6 September 2025

Du 1er au 6 septembre 2025, l’équipe scientifique du programme WomenAtWork, dont l’IFAS-Recherche est partenaire, accompagnée de chercheur·ses de l’Université de Stanford, était accueillie par le Wits History Workshop pour l’école d’été du programme. Les séminaires de travail et visites d’institutions patrimoniales, de musées et d’archives à Johannesburg et Soweto, menées par leurs curateur·ices et chercheur·ses, ont rendue tangible l’approche novatrice sudafricaine des questions liées à l’histoire populaire. Retrouvez le compte-rendu complet du séjour ici. From September 1 to 6, 2025, the scientific team of the WomenAtWork program, of which IFAS-Research is a partner, accompanied by researchers from Stanford University, was hosted by the Wits History Workshop for the program’s summer school. Workshops and seminars as well as visits of heritage institutions, museums, and archives in Johannesburg and Soweto, guided by curators and researchers, made particularly tangible the innovative South African approach to social and labour history. Lancement du nouveau centre international de recherche CNRS-Université du Witwatersrand | Launch of the new international research centre CNRS-University of the Witwatersrand

Le 28 novembre 2025, le CNRS et l’Université du Witwatersrand annonçaient officiellement la création du septième centre international de recherche du CNRS (IRC), le premier sur le continent africain. La récente affiliation de Laurent Bruxelles à l’IFAS-Recherche lui permettra notamment d’assurer la direction scientifique de l’IRC du côté français. On November 28th, 2025, the CNRS and the University of the Witwatersrand officially announced the creation of the seventh CNRS International Research Centre (IRC), the first one on the African continent. Laurent Bruxelles’s recent affiliation with IFAS-Research will notably allow him to oversee the scientific direction of this new IRC for the French side. Bonne retraite à Peter Thelele ! | Happy retirement to Peter Thelele!

Le 25 novembre 2025, nous avons célébré les 25 années de service de Peter Thelele, pilier de l’équipe de l’IFAS, notamment chargé de l’accueil, avant son départ à la retraite en fin d’année. L’Ambassadeur de France en Afrique du Sud, au Lesotho et au Malawi, S.E. David Martinon, a prononcé un discours soulignant la contribution de Peter.  Nous nous joignons à nos collègues de l’IFAS dans la formulation de tous nos vœux à Peter pour cette nouvelle étape ! On 25 November 2025, we celebrated Peter Thelele’s 25 years of service as the welcoming face of IFAS front desk, before he retires at the end of the year. Ambassador of France to South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi, H.E. David Martinon, delivered an address highlighting Peter’s contribution. With our colleagues from IFAS, we wish Peter all the best for this new adventure!

Prix de thèse du GIS Études Africaines en France 2026 | GIS African Studies in France 2026 PhD thesis award

En 2026, le GIS Études Africaines récompense d’une somme de 2500 € (aide à la publication) des travaux de recherches doctorales en Sciences Humaines et Sociales et en Lettres, portant sur le continent africain et ses diasporas. Sont éligibles des travaux soutenus en France entre le 1er janvier 2025 et le 31 décembre 2025. L’écriture en français de la thèse ne constitue plus un critère de sélection, et aucune condition de nationalité ne s’applique. Retrouvez l’appel ici et candidatez avec le 16 février 2026. In 2026, the GIS African Studies network will award 2500€ prizes (publication support) to doctoral research in the Humanities and Social Sciences and in Literature focusing on the African continent and its diasporas. Le GIS Études Africaines propose un soutien financier aux jeunes chercheur·es rattaché·es à une des unités membres du GIS (cf liste ici), afin de participer à des colloques internationaux en Sciences Humaines et Sociales sur les Afriques et leurs diasporas, entre le 1er mars 2026 et le 28 février 2027. Science Po Masters and PhD Student Exchange Programme

Sciences Po, a network of Social Sciences and Humanities research universities based in France, offers international exchange programme for Masters and PhD students based outside of France to spend a semester or two in one of the affiliated universities in France. These exchange programmes are open to all students from one of the 480 partner universities around the world. Call for Chapters “African Revolutionary Papers: Politics and Practices of Activist Archiving”

Koni Benson (University of the Western Cape), Sa’eed Husaini (Centre for Democracy and Development, Abuja) and Noor Nieftagoodien (Wits History Workshop), from the Revolutionary Papers Project, in conversation with Pluto Press, invite contributions for an edited book collection entitled “African Revolutionary Papers: Politics and Practices of Activist Archiving”. The initiative also aims to build a network of researchers, scholars, archivists, artists, and activists committed to African revolutionary pasts and present, by supporting contributors to come together for an in-person workshop midway through the publication process.
