From our BlogWhy Development Economics Should Claim Adaptation Finance »Global North donors set the terms, define the eligibility criteria, and determine the metrics by which (climate change) adaptation is funded, while the structural vulnerabilities of the periphery – shaped by decades of uneven integration into the world economy – remain inadequately addressed. » Pınar Yardımcı argues that adaptation finance « belongs at the centre of development economics – as a test case for whether the international economic order can move beyond reproducing historical asymmetries under new labels. » Read more

Cooking Knowledge Together: Rethinking Collaboration in AcademiaUsing the metaphor of “kitchen-work,” Luca Sára Bródy argues that research, much like cooking, depends on relational, preparatory, and frequently undervalued labour: « Even when participatory methods are used, collaboration is often treated as a technique – something added on, rather than something that fundamentally reshapes how knowledge is produced. » Read more

Building a National Platform for Development and Sustainability – The Czech Experience »We have both worked in development research for more than two decades. And yet, again and again we were amazed by stumbling upon great publications and scholars we didn’t know about. They may have worked in a neighbouring faculty in Prague or a smaller regional university. So, as simple as it may sound, this observation became the main motivation behind the creation of a national platform. »

New Reflection Paper Out!The Disciplinary Roots of Disagreement in Development StudiesDevelopment Studies is well established institutionally and over the last 20-30 years has become more intellectually diverse. This paper asks how scholars in the field understand what Development Studies is, using a new survey of about 300 academics in departments offering postgraduate Development Studies programmes across more than 30 countries. Our central finding is that disciplinary training explains these understandings more consistently than does institutional geography. Read more

Rewatch: Webinar on Historical TraumaHistorical trauma—arising from experiences such as colonialism, slavery, violent conflict, and systemic dispossession—can have profound and lasting effects on societies. Across generations, these experiences shape political institutions, economic opportunities, social relations, and patterns of trust, influencing development trajectories in complex ways. This webinar explored how historical trauma operates across different contexts and scales, and how it continues to influence political, economic, and social development today. Watch

Highlight: Int. Dev. Coop. and the Emerging Global OrderIDOS Discussion PaperA little more than a year into the Trump 2.0 era, the “post–Cold War” international order as we know it is coming to an end. Amid increasing volatility and conflict, the shape and character of the order that will replace it are dangerously unclear. There are ambitions by so-called middle powers – including some member states of the EU – to provide an effective response, but questions remain as to their potential impact. Three scenarios can be envisaged: (1) an Orwellian dystopia dominated by three global powers – the United States, China and Russia; (2) a “new Cold War” between two rival capitalist models; and (3) the survival of the rules-based international order, possibly as a counterweight to oligarchic spheres of influence. Read more
