The event is free and open to all, but RSVP is essential via this link. As 2026 marks the anniversary of two major South African student protests — the student uprisings of 1976, and the #rhodesmustfall, #feesmustfall and #endoutsourcing movements of 2015-2016 — this workshop proposes to reflect on the visual archive(s) of the protests, on its (re)constitution and on its uses across time in the re-membering and re-presenting South African student movements. La séance a fait salle comble, rassemblant publics universitaires et grand public. L’échange avec l’archéologue Laurent Bruxelles (IFAS-Recherche, CNRS) a permis d’aborder les résultats récents de ses recherches, les relations entre chercheur·ses européen·nes, d’Afrique australe et communautés locales, l’impact de l’IA et du changement climatique sur les travaux des archéologues, ou encore les conditions de réalisation et de diffusion d’un tel documentaire.The Audiovisual Department of the French Institute of South Africa and IFAS-Research screened the documentary “Africa: In the Footsteps of the First Humans,” by Anthony Binst, on Wednesday, 15 April 2026, at the Bioscope cinema. The screening gathered a full house of academics and interested members of the public. The discussion with archaeologist Laurent Bruxelles (IFAS-Research, CNRS) tackled a range of topics, including the most recent findings from his research, relationships between European and Southern African scientists and local communities, the impact of AI and climate change on archaeological research, and the production and distribution of such a documentary. Autour de nous | Around usÉvénements & parutions | Events & PublicationsConference « The Student Uprising Remembered », 28-30 May 2026, Wits University (Braamfontein) & UJ Soweto Campus  The Wits History Workshop, in partnership with the University of Johannesburg, UNISA and the Seth Mazibuko Foundation are organising the 50th Anniversary Conference of the 1976 Students’ Uprising from 28 to 30 May 2026 in Soweto/Johannesburg. This landmark gathering will bring together scholars, activists, community historians, heritage practitioners, and artists to critically commemorate the uprising, explore its causes and legacies, and connect past struggles to contemporary youth movements across South Africa and the global south. The Maison des Sciences Humaines et Sociales Paris Nord launches an annual call for projects addressing issues aligned with its research axes and themes (Arts and CCI; Body, Health and Society; Transitions, Regulations and Innovations; Rethinking the Contemporary City). This call is open to projects of high scientific quality, including exploratory and risk-taking initiatives, and meeting the criteria of interdisciplinary, interinstitutional and international collaborations. Look back on DigArq training seminar – 4-9 May 2026, Benguela     From May 4 to 9, as part of the Franco-Angolan project @digarq.angola, of which IFAS-Research is a partner, the National Museum of Archaeology of Benguela hosted an intensive seminar dedicated to archaeological sciences and Angolan cultural heritage, organized by ISCED-Sumbe in cooperation with the CNRS and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris. Over the course of six days, 37 students and 4 professors from the ISCEDs of Sumbe, Huíla, Huambo, and Benguela gathered alongside professionals from Angolan museums and Angolan and French researchers specializing in paleontology, African prehistory, historiography, ceramology, and paleometallurgy.The seminar also included the participation of five museum professionals from Angola, including specialists from the National Museum of Archaeology of Benguela itself, creating a space for scientific, pedagogical, and human exchange between different institutions and generations. The main objective of this training program was to bring together fourth-year History students from the ISCEDs and archaeology lecturers from different Angolan institutions around the museum heritage and scientific resources available in museums, while strengthening their role in the training of Angola’s future teachers. Throughout the week, students took part in practical archaeological science workshops using the museum’s materials and collections. These activities provided hands-on experience with archaeological methodologies, the analysis of heritage objects, and scientific research applied to the Angolan context. Participants were organized into mixed groups, encouraging collaborative work between students from different provinces. Alongside the practical activities, each group developed an original project, leaving room for creativity, reflection on the country’s needs, and the aspirations of the new generation. The challenge was to propose concrete, innovative, and achievable initiatives for the future of heritage, education, and cultural valorization in Angola. The final projects were presented before a jury composed of Dr. Monica Lebão, Cultural Attaché of the French Embassy in Angola; Dr. Maria Helena Benjamim, Director of the National Museum of Archaeology of Benguela; artist-researcher Berta Teixeira; Dr. Maria da Conceição Barbosa, Vice-President of ISCED Sumbe; and Dr. Hélder Bahu, President of ISCED Huíla. At the closing ceremony of the seminar, participants received a nationally recognized training certificate in Angola, awarded by the Presidency of ISCED-Sumbe. More than an academic training program, this seminar represented an extraordinary human experience, marked by generosity, a love of knowledge, science, sharing, and the education of future generations. |
