Ecrit par Emmanuelle Lavallée & Anne-Sophie Robilliard  Written by Emmanuelle Lavallee & Anne-Sophie Robilliard Dans ce nouveau DIALogue un peu tardif, vous lirez un focus sur la gestion des forêts et la déforestation en Afrique subsaharienne, un sujet vital étant donné la contribution des forêts et des arbres aux populations et à la planète. Ce focus est proposé par Kenneth Houngbedji, chercheur à l’IRD et membre de l’équipe DIAL à l’UMR LEDa depuis le 1er janvier 2020. Il s’appuie sur les résultats d’un projet mené avec une équipe pluridisciplinaire où il explore le problème de la mesure de la déforestation et de l’identification de l’impact de différents modes de gestion forestière.

Malgré le confinement, les séminaires universitaires hebdomadaires et les réunions d’équipe mensuelles se poursuivent. En décembre, nous accueillerons (en ligne) l’édition annuelle des Journées doctorales de développement, un événement qui rassemble des doctorants de différentes institutions (CERDI (Clermont-Ferrand), CES (Paris), EEA (Casablanca), ERUDITE (Créteil & Marne-la-Vallée), IHEID (Genève), LEO (Orléans), et DIAL) pendant une journée et demie.

Nous avons le plaisir de vous annoncer la parution d’un ouvrage édité par Florent Bédécarrats (AFD), Isabelle Guérin (IRD, CESSMA) et François Roubaud (IRD, DIAL-LEDa) qui réunit des auteurs de différents horizons (dont 2 prix Nobels d’économie) et propose une perspective critique de la contribution des essais aléatoires contrôlés (RCT) dans le champ du développement (plus de détails ci-dessous). Une version française de l’ouvrage devrait bientôt être disponible.

Nous avons enfin le plaisir de vous annoncer la Conférence Internationale en Economie du Développement 2021 qui se tiendra du 30 juin au 2 juillet 2021 à l’Université de Bordeaux et en ligne, et qui est co-organisée par les équipes de recherche de DIAL (LEDa, Université Paris-Dauphine, IRD, CNRS), du GREThA et du LAREFI (Université de Bordeaux et CNRS). Les sessions plénières seront données par Elisabeth Sadoulet (UC Berkeley), Alain de Janvry (UC Berkeley), Gero Carletto (Banque mondiale) et Mathieu Couttenier (ENS Lyon). Nous vous invitons à soumettre vos contributions jusqu’au 31 janvier 2021 sur le site de la conférence: https://devconf2021.sciencesconf.org. Le résultat du processus de sélection sera envoyé à la fin du mois de mars 2021. L’appel à communications est disponible ici.
In this new, somewhat belated DIALogue, you will read a focus on forest management and deforestation in sub-Saharan Africa, a vital topic given the contribution made by forests and trees to populations and the planet. Thisfocus is proposed by Kenneth Houngbedji, a research fellow at IRD and member of the DIAL team at UMR LEDa since January the 1st 2020. It is based on the results of a project carried out with a multidisciplinary team where he explores the problem of measuring deforestation and identifying the impact of different modes of forest management.

Despite the lockdown, weekly academic seminars and monthly team meetings continue. In December, we will host (online) the annual edition of the Development Doctoral Days, an event that brings together doctoral students from different institutions (CERDI (Clermont-Ferrand), CES (Paris), EEA (Casablanca), ERUDITE (Créteil & Marne-la-Vallée), IHEID (Geneva), LEO (Orléans), and DIAL) for one day and a half.

We are pleased to announce the publication of a book edited by Florent Bédécarrats (AFD), Isabelle Guérin (IRD, CESSMA) and François Roubaud (IRD, DIAL-LEDa) which brings together authors from different backgrounds (including 2 Nobel prizes laureates in economics) and offers a critical perspective on the contribution of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to development (more details below). A French version of the book should be available soon.

Finally, we are pleased to announce the International Conference on Development Economics 2021 which will be held from June 30 to July 2, 2021 at the University of Bordeaux and online, and which is co-organized by the research teams of DIAL (LEDa, Université Paris-Dauphine, IRD, CNRS), GREThA and LAREFI (University of Bordeaux and CNRS). The keynote speaches will be given by Elisabeth Sadoulet (UC Berkeley), Alain de Janvry (UC Berkeley), Gero Carletto (World Bank) and Mathieu Couttenier (ENS Lyon). We invite you to submit your contributions by January 31, 2021 on the conference website: https://devconf2021.sciencesconf.org. Réflexions sur la gestion forestière et la déforestation en Afrique subsaharienne

Il est communément reconnu que les forêts et les arbres apportent une contribution vitale à la population et à la planète. La forêt contribue à faire face au changement climatique en séquestrant le carbone, stabilise les sols, régule les cours d’eau et héberge une part importante de la biodiversité terrestre. La forêt constitue aussi une source de nourriture, de médicaments, d’énergie, de revenu et participe à la sécurité alimentaire des communautés locales. Enfin, la forêt est complémentaire des activités agricoles car elle offre un habitat pour les pollinisateurs et les ennemis naturels des ravageurs d’importance agricole.

Examining Forest Management and Deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa

The vital contribution made by forests and trees to populations and the planet has been widely acknowledged. Forests help cope with climate change by sequestering carbon, stabilizing soils, regulating waterways, and hosting a significant portion of terrestrial biodiversity. They are also sources of food, medicine, energy, and income, while contributing to the food security of local communities. Lastly, forests are complementary to agricultural activities as they provide habitat for pollinators and the natural enemies of agricultural pests.
