With less than a month to go until our next general conference Solidarity, Peace and Social Justice, organised jointly with ISS, we are happy to announce that the draft conference programme is now available online. We would also like to remind you that the registration deadline for conference presenters is tomorrow, 11 June! And of course we cordially invite you to the public Dudley Seers lecture which traditionally allows a renowned speaker to formally set the tone for the debates at and around the conference. We are pleased that we could win Rohini Pande, Henry J. Heinz II Professor of Economics and Director of the Economic Growth Center at Yale University, for this special lecture. Our thematic focus today is on technological development. Enjoy the scroll!
Pre-Conference Dudley Seers Lecture: 1 July, 16.00 CET
Rohini Pande’s talk will explore how power structures – within households, communities and countries – are determined by informal and formal institutions. It will analyze how inequality of power and economic inequality interact within these institutions: Today, the majority of the world’s extreme poor live in lower middle-income countries. In these countries, the persistence of poverty increasingly reflects unequal access to economic opportunities and low levels of redistribution. Within these countries, poverty is increasingly concentrated in rural communities and among ethnic minorities. And, within households, women and girls often receive a lower share of economic resources. This persists even though most of these countries are electoral democracies with universal suffrage. From our Blog: (De)coloniality in Knowledge Production
« Decoloniality requires not only to challenge epistemic imprisonment and mental slavery. It also has to conduct social struggles to create relations, which can nurse a decolonisation in material aspects », writes Henning Melber in our latest blog. Drawing on thinkers like Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni, Walter Mignolo and Wahbie Long, he stresses that « Decolonisation remains work in progress and requires more than a focus on curricula », and that « addressing institutional racism understood as racism in certain institutions is a necessary but not sufficient step. Fundamental transformation of societies must embrace all forms of discrimination and “othering”, but also material aspects of transformation. Read the post

Highlight: Child Poverty and Social Protection in Africa
The open access book « Child Poverty and Social Protection in Central and Western Africa » by the Global Research Programme on Inequality (GRIP) assesses various child poverty trends in the region. Child poverty is distinct, conceptually, and different, quantitatively, from adult poverty. It requires its own independent measurement—otherwise half of the population in developing countries may be unaccounted for when assessing poverty reduction. This book posits that child poverty should be measured based on constitutive rights of poverty, using a multi-dimensional approach. The argument is supported by chapters actually applying and expanding this approach. Read more
