EADI eNewsletter #1/1 2021 | Call for Book Proposals, Political Economy & More

Editorial

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and healthy new year, which we hope will bring many opportunities to make the world a more just and sustainable place. For us at EADI, 2021 is a very special year, as it will witness the first General Conference to be held entirely online. Like in 2020 we will do our best to offer high quality online events throughout the year, and would like to remind you that our first virtual dialogue this year is already on 19 January. What our publications are concerned, we are proud to present a special issue of our journal EJDR on the development impacts of COVID 19, and invite your ideas for forthcoming issues of our book series. As usual, we have collected some publication picks, calls, vacancies and online events from our member community further below.
Call for Book Proposals – Global Development Series
Our Global Development book series is currently inviting proposals for a new volume in any sub-field of Development Studies. The series reflects the multi-disciplinary character of EADI member institutes and the association at large and aims at broadening our understanding of the processes that advance or impede human development, whether from a political, economic, sociological or anthropological perspective. From our Blog: Pacific Women in Climate Negotiations
Behind the Scenes: The Strong Voice of Pacific Women in Climate Negotiations
Women from Pacific Island countries have long been strategic and decisive leaders in climate negotiations, yet their stories are relatively unknown. They influenced the making of the Paris Agreement as lead national technical negotiators, although « the UNFCCC is a space designed by men and dominant economies. It is a site where Pacific Island nations and particularly women had to use innovative negotiating strategies to build alliances and increase their voice and power. » Read the post

Modeling a Pandemic (COVID-19) Management Strategy for Urban Slums Using Social Geometry Framework, 19 January 2021, 11.00 CET
With Francis Onditi (School of International Relations and Diplomacy, Riara University, Kenya). Our central claim is that the containment strategy that was instituted to control spread of COVID-19 failed to recognize the socio-cultural and livelihood complexities of the urban slum residents. Drawing on social geometry approach in the analysis of human relations, we reveal some insights offered by our experiences in theorizing about public health intervention (PHI) and developing an alternative analytical framework to support a PHI strategy that is compatible with the swing-like lifestyle of residents in the informal settlements. Special Issue: The Development Impacts of COVID-19
The latest issue of our journal, the European Journal of Development Research is a special issue entitled « The Development Impacts of COVID-19 at Home and Abroad: Politics and Implications of Government Action » and is fully open access for a limited time.
The twelve articles illuminate the need for diverse responses beyond business-as-usual, attention to the multiplicity of impact of policies formulated, and progressive strategies to counteract the impacts of this disaster around the world. The path of future research is clear: studies need to consider and give voice to marginalised groups to counteract the short- and long-term impacts of the pandemic. Browse the issue

Highlight: Development Cooperation for the 2030 Agenda
The Palgrave Handbook of Development Cooperation for Achieving the 2030 Agenda (Open Access)
This book offers a sound and clear understanding of the narratives, norms, and institutions as far as development cooperation in the context of Agenda 2030 is concerned. The authors emphasize the role of collective action as a method to foster the attainment of global policy frameworks such as Agenda 2030 across national, regional, and global levels, and diverse policy areas. However, regardless of the mechanism set to attain the SDGs, they doubt that its attainment is still feasible due to the characteristics of power struggles and unresolved contestations surrounding this global development agenda.
