News from EADI: Development Policy for the 21st Century, Social Protection & More

Welcome to the fortnightly newsletter of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI).
  2nd Issue August 2021
Editorial

Today we look forward to the roundtable event on rural development trajectories next Thursday which is based on the latest special issue of our journal, the EJDR.  Our new blog post discusses possible pathways for future development policy, and we would also like to recommend the MOOC on Industrial Policy in Africa, developed by today’s featured EADI member UNU-WIDER. Our thematic focus is on social protection today, highlighting some new publications and an open access handbook on the topic. And despite the summer break, we’ve got quite a few interesting vacancy announcements at the bottom – together with the usual calls, blogs, and online events.

From our Blog: Development Policy for the 21th Century Seven principles for making development policy fit for the 21st century
« How can the competition between foreign, security, development, economic and climate policy that saps substantial amounts of energy be turned into a fruitful complementarity? DIE Directors Anna-Katharina Hornidge and Imme Scholz address this question in our latest blog post. They see (German) development policy at a crossroad, with three possible pathways ahead: a narrow focus on poverty reduction in least developed countries, a broader focus on the wider horizon of the Agenda 2030, and a third one which they explicitly reject: namely merging development policy with foreign policy, environmental, economic and trade or defence policy. Starting from there they outline seven guiding principles for a debate on development policy reforms. Read the post To the blog overview

EJDR: Latest Open Access Articles

Our journal, the Europen Journal of Development Research (EJDR), has published some new open access articles:  Aspiration Formation and Ecological Shocks in Rural Kenya Dynamics of Human–Water Interactions in the Kilombero Valley, Tanzania: Insights from Farmers’ Aspirations and Decisions in an Uncertain Environment Who Wants to Farm? 26 August: Special Issue Event – Rural Aspirations
Building on the results and the breadth of the contributions to  the  EJDR Special Issue « Rural aspirations – livelihood decisions and rural development trajectories » speakers will highlight research directions and gaps, then proceed to start a discussion on what development stakeholders can learn for their daily activities and project design. The roundtable will include a group discussion on the implications of the differences for future research strategies, followed by a discussion on practical implications of the Special Issue for development planning and design. The event will start at 15.00 CEST. Read more and register

Highlight: Handbook on Social Protection Systems
This exciting and innovative open access handbook provides readers with a comprehensive and globally relevant overview of the instruments, actors and design features of social protection systems, as well as their application and impacts in practice. It is the first book that centres around system building globally, a theme that has gained political importance yet has received relatively little attention in academia. The book is edited by Esther Schüring from Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, University of Applied Sciences, and Markus Loewe from the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), who is also co-convenor of our Social Protection Working Group.
