In partnership with the Fondation Fiminco and the ArTeC Graduate School, IFAS-Research is delighted to invite applications from PhD candidates, active in the fields of Creative Arts, Social Sciences and the Humanities, and based in a South African university (no age limit or conditions of nationality), for a 2-month creative- or practise-based research residency in the greater Paris area, to take place between October and December 2025. PHC Protea 2026 L’Ambassade de France en Afrique du Sud annonce l’ouverture de l’appel du Programme PHC Protea 2026, financé par le Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères, le Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche et la Fondation nationale de la recherche sud-africaine (NRF). Cet appel, couvrant toutes les disciplines scientifiques, vise à promouvoir la coopération scientifique entre la France et l’Afrique du Sud en finançant des projets collaboratifs sur deux ans entre des équipes des deux pays, favorisant ainsi la mobilité des chercheur·ses vers leurs partenaires. The Embassy of France in South Africa announces the opening of the PHC Protea 2025 call for proposals, funded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, and the National Research Foundation (NRF). This call, covering all scientific disciplines, aims to promote scientific cooperation between France and South Africa by funding collaborative projects over two years between teams from both countries, facilitating the mobility of researchers to their partners. À cette occasion, l’historien Noor Nieftagodien, directeur du Wits History Workshop, chercheur invité du programme ERC WomAtWork et partenaire de longue date de l’IFAS-Recherche, présentera ses travaux lors d’une intervention intitulée « Oral History and its Radical Promises: a Perspective from South Africa », de 10h30-11h30. Find the event programme and more information here. 30 ans de l’IFAS-Recherche | 30 years of IFAS-ResearchSounds of southern Africa: Music, Empowerment, Freedom (2021-2022) À l’occasion du mois de la Fête de la Musique, redécouvrez le programme Sounds of southern Africa: Music, Empowerment, Freedom (2021-2022), partenariat entre l’IFAS-Recherche et l’IFAS, avec le soutien de l’Institut français Paris. Le programme explore les liens entre musique, politique, liberté d’expression et censure dans plusieurs pays d’Afrique australe et centrale, du XXe siècle à nos jours. Le programme a notamment donné lieu à une série de podcasts et à un court documentaire intitulé « The Hidden Years of South African Music ». As we enter the month of Fête de la Musique, rediscover the program Sounds of Southern Africa: Music, Empowerment, Freedom (2021–2022), a partnership between IFAS-Research and IFAS, with the support of the Institut Français Paris. The program explored the connections between music, politics, freedom of expression, and censorship in several countries of Southern and Central Africa, from the 20th century to the present day. It led to a podcast series and a short documentary entitled The Hidden Years of South African Music. Retours sur nos derniers événements | Look back on our last eventsWorkshop “Alternative Archives? Methods and Objectives. Conversations between Nigeria and South Africa” – 8-9 April 2025L’atelier de recherche du 8 avril a réuni une quarantaine de personnes, étudiant·es, chercheur·ses, professionnel·les des archives et musées, militant·es et membres de la société civile. Le second jour, limité à 25 participant·tes, était dédié à un atelier de recherche pratique autour de la constitution, structuration ou diffusion d’archives, universitaires ou non. Le dialogue entre acteur·ices professionnel·les des archives (archivistes et chercheur·ses) et non professionnel·les a été riche en questionnements. Des liens entre participant·es nigérian·nes et sud-africain·es se sont noués, dont nous espérons soutenir le développement à l’avenir. The research workshop held on April 8 brought together about forty participants, including students, researchers, archive and museum professionals, activists, and members of civil society. The second day, limited to 25 participants, was dedicated to a hands-on research workshop focused on the creation, structuring, and dissemination of academic and non-academic archives. The discussions between professional actors in the field of archives (archivists and researchers) and non-professionals was rich in questions and insights. Connections were established between Nigerian and South African participants, which we hope to support and develop further in the future.   Workshop “Healing and Change in African Cities” – 15 April 2025 Le séminaire a rassemblé 15 chercheur·ses, doctorant·es et étudiant·es ainsi qu’une journaliste et une curatrice, issu·es de nombreuses disciplines, telles que la sociologie, l’anthropologie, l’histoire, la littérature, l’économie et les études urbaines. Les intervenant·es et les 70 personnes du public ont engagé de riches discussions sur les manières de revendiquer, traverser, organiser et transformer l’espace des villes africaines. Les présentations de l’événement feront l’objet d’une publication, à paraître courant 2026. The workshop brought together a group of 15 scholars and students, as well as a freelance journalist and a freelance curator, from various disciplines, such as sociology, anthropology, history, literature, economics and urban studies. The speakers, along with the 70 attendees, engaged in rich discussions on ways of claiming, traversing, ordering and transforming space in African cities. The papers presented during the event will be published in book, scheduled for 2026.
